Preamble
Minimum Requirements
A Masters' Degree in a Language/
Communication or an equivalent field (e.g.
Health Sciences with professional education) -
Preference will be given to candidates with a
relevant Ph.D qualification
At least 5 years' teaching experience at higher
education level in a relevant discipline
At least one year teaching professional
communication or related subject in higher
education
Recommendations
A relevant Doctorate Degree
A base degree in any health, science or
mathematics discipline
Research and publications in higher education
related field
Record of involvement in institutional
development activities (e.g., committee work,
policy development)
Key Performance Areas
Lecturing in interdisciplinary professional
communication (25% workload) across the
faculty
Coordinate and chair the faculty language
committee
Represent the faculty at all related institutional
committees (language, library etc.)
Serve on Faculty Committees e.g. Research
Ethics Committee or other
Investigate current educational/language
practices and promote scholarship in the Faculty
Liaise with HOD's and academic staff to
determine the mainstream, departmental
language and communication requirements in the
faculty
Plan and implement language development
strategies for the faculty
Work with the Faculty Management and DCOs to
coordinate language developments across the
Faculty
Implement and coordinate language development
programmes for students
Develop teaching materials to support language
development interventions in the faculty
Establish self-access, language learning
resources and facilities in the faculty
Awareness of current e-learning developments
Develop and promote e-learning resources
Implement and coordinate the integration of
language across the mainstream curricula of all
academic department in the faculty
Undertake academic leadership with regard to
language issues in Extended Curriculum
Programmes and the First Year Experience in
the Faculty
Undertake any necessary initiatives to advance
the language development of health science
students to increase throughput and pass rates
Undertake postgraduate supervision and
implement language support for postgraduate
students in health sciences
Undertake own research into pertinent and
relevant problems related to language in higher
education, including the production of own
research outputs
Prepare and manage the faculty language
budget
Implement and coordinate language development
initiatives for staff
Write proposals for the funding of language
development interventions
Motivate cross-cutting interventions to Faculty
Management
Gather information and compile reports for
faculty and institutional purposes
